What Is a Mandatory Alcohol Server Training?

The Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board MAST Permit is a document required by law for anyone who serves, mixes, sells, or supervises the sale of alcohol for on-premises consumption at liquor-licensed establishments.

The Mandatory Alcohol Server Training is provided by third-party providers certified by the WSLCB. Upon successful completion of the course, we will issue you a permit and report the completion to the WSLCB within 30 days. 

You will receive:

  • A Class 12 permit if you are 21 years of age or older 
  • A Class 13 if you are between the ages of 18 and 21

Washington Alcohol Training Requirements

  • In Washington State, alcohol servers are required to complete the MAST course to obtain a permit to serve alcohol. 
  • You must get your MAST 12 or MAST 13 permit within 60 days of starting your job.
  • The MAST permit must be renewed every five years, and servers must keep their permit and a valid ID on them at all times when serving alcohol. 
  • To verify your MAST permit’s validity, use the MAST Permit Checker. Simply enter your last name and date of birth or your permit number. WSLCB keeps records for five years. If your permit has expired, your information will not be displayed.
  • Keep your original MAST permit – it’s yours. If your employer needs to see it, give them a copy. Your permit is valid for use at multiple jobs or volunteer positions.
  • Failure to comply with these regulations can result in costly fines and even the revocation of a business’s liquor license.

The permit is designed to ensure that those who serve alcohol do so responsibly and in compliance with state laws.

Anyone who sells or serves alcohol or supervises the sale and service of alcohol for on-premises consumption is legally required to have a MAST permit. According to the law, managers, bartenders and servers will all need a permit.

You are required to complete Mandatory Alcohol Server Training within 60 days of the initial hire date. If you are conducting a sampling or tasting at an approved location, you must be able to present your Class 12 permit. There is no grace period for anyone conducting alcohol tastings.

The course is required by the state to take a minimum of 3 hours. The test afterwards concludes with 40 questions and usually takes up to an hour to complete.

The permits are good for five years and expire on the first day of the month following the month you passed your test. For example, if you took the test on October 20, 2021, your permit will expire on November 1, 2026.

The requirement to provide your Social Security Number (SSN) is mandated by Washington State law (RCW 26.23.150). This law requires the WSLCB to collect SSNs for child support enforcement purposes, as federally mandated. Consequently, ServeSmart must collect your SSN to issue your permit. Washington requires that you retake the training course again in order to renew your permit. You can’t renew the permit automatically.
