Is a MAST Permit Required in Washington State?

Yes, Here's What You Need to Know

In Washington State, serving alcohol without a valid MAST permit isn’t just a fireable offense; it’s a violation of state law. The Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB) requires every bartender, server, and alcohol service employee to hold an active permit within 60 days of being hired. No exceptions. Most employers won’t let you touch a bottle without one. ServeSmart’s WSLCB-approved online course gets you fully certified in about 3 hours, from any device, for $19.99, so you can walk into your first shift with everything in order.

Class 12 or Class 13 MAST Permit — Which One Do You Need?

It depends on your age. Here's the short version.

Class 13 MAST Permit

Ages 18-20

If you’re between 18 and 20, this is your permit. You can take orders, serve beer and wine at tables, and open bottles, but you can’t mix or pour spirits or supervise other staff.

The good news: when you turn 21, you can upgrade to a Class 12 at no extra cost.

Class 12 MAST Permit

Ages 21+

If you’re 21 or older, this is your permit. You get full serving privileges, mixing and pouring spirits, drawing from taps, and supervising other alcohol service staff.

This is the permit most bartenders and lead servers need to do their jobs completely.
